Men’s Health
Men: Specific nutrient requirements
Due to different physical needs, metabolic processes, biological differences and health requirements, there are differences between men and women in the need for vitamins, minerals & trace elements.
While the demand for nutrients in women focuses mainly on menstruation, planning to have children, pregnancy & breastfeeding, menopause and bone formation, men often focus on specific topics such as male fertility, prostate health or the targeted development of muscle mass in addition to cardiovascular health.
The male body is on average larger and has more muscle mass than that of the female. That’s why men typically need more magnesium. The National Institute of Health (NIH) recommends 400-420 mg per day for adult men and 310-320 mg for adult women.1 Magnesium is involved in numerous biochemical reactions in the body, including muscle and nerve function, energy metabolism and blood pressure regulation.
Hormone levels and reproductive functions
Zinc and selenium are important for both sexes. Men may have a slightly higher need for zinc due to the production of testosterone and semen. Zinc is also essential for male fertility and for regulating the level of testosterone in the blood. Supplementation can prove to be advantageous, especially in men planning to have children.
The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends a daily intake of 14 mg zinc for men of adult age (compared to 8 mg for women of adult age).2
In addition to zinc, the mineral selenium contributes to sperm production and thus to male fertility.
Prostate Health
In Germany, about 70 per cent of men over the age of 70 suffer from an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia). In Asia, only about 10-15% are affected.3 Experts suspect that Western diets are one of the causes and recommend an Asian or Mediterranean diet – not just for maintaining men’s health – to stay healthy into old age.6 Both Asian and Mediterranean foods are known for their health benefits. These are mainly due to the preparation of fresh, varied vegetables, healthy fats (nut and olive oil) and fish. Find more information in our Nutrition & Vitality product world.
Men and their health awareness
Health awareness among men appears to be less pronounced than among women. Men are less likely to include fruit and vegetables in their daily diet. Beer consumption among German men is 6 times higher than among women and there are more smokers among the male population than among the female population.4,5 The traditional role model of the “strong man” often prevented people from being mindful and attentive to their own bodies. There has been a positive shift towards greater health awareness among men in recent years. In today’s society, even men are allowed to admit that they are stressed or even need professional help for their mental health.
