Additional Requirements for Athletes
Healthy lifestyles undoubtedly involve sufficient exercise. For moderate physical activities, such as cycling, swimming or hiking for one hour a day, it is usually easy to meet energy, fluid and nutrient requirements with a normal balanced diet.
However, if the sports programme consists of more than 300 training hours per year (approx. 6 hours per week), this is referred to as competitive sport.(1) Depending on the type of sport and training content, additional sports-related requirements may exist. Long-term endurance stress, excessive sweating or sports diets, e.g. for weight loss, may lead athletes to develop nutrient deficiencies.
Fast Muscle Building
One macronutrient in particular is used in the Sport & Fitness sector: protein powder. Protein powders are very popular for building up muscle mass quickly. High-quality proteins provide the muscles with important amino acids and are responsible for muscle growth and repair. Protein powder is not just part of the daily diet for bodybuilders. It is an effective and convenient source of protein for all athletes who want to build muscle quickly. If the optimum ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fats in a balanced diet is not enough to build muscle, people often turn to the popular protein shake for sports.
Useful Nutrients & Vitamins in Sport
Maximum sporting performance can only be achieved with an optimum supply of essential nutrients, minerals and vitamins. As this is often difficult to achieve with a healthy, fresh and wholesome diet (see “Nutrition & Vitality” product range) in particularly demanding situations, supplementation with food supplements often comes into play here. When supplementing an athlete’s diet, the focus is also on reducing susceptibility to infections and helping athletes to recover quickly after an injury or illness.
The German Nutrition Society (DGE) has drafted a position paper on “Minerals and vitamins in sport”, where the following nutrients are considered critical in sport(2):
- Iron
- Calcium
- Sodium (electrolyte balance must be monitored)
- Vitamin D
In addition, the following vitamins and minerals are associated with physical processes that can be caused by sporting activities or may be necessary for increased performance.

As free radicals are formed in the cells during exercise, it is important that the body has sufficient antioxidants to trap them.(3) For this reason, it is equally important to make sure there are sufficient regeneration phases after intensive sports sessions.
Antioxidants that counteract oxidative stress and associated approved health claims:
- Copper contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress
- Manganese contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress
- Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress
- Riboflavin contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress

Vitamin D, which plays an important role in bone and muscle metabolism:

For athletes, any absence due to illness is a huge step backwards. The muscle development and performance already achieved must be painstakingly regained through intensive training after recovery. For this reason, rapid regeneration is also important for training progress.
