Astaxanthin – a real tongue twister – is probably better known as the pigment that gives crustaceans, salmon and flamingos their reddish colour. A natural source is the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, which produces astaxanthin under stress conditions. Studies have shown that astaxanthin is the strongest known antioxidant. It reduces free radicals and container therefore protect cells from oxidative stress. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect.
