The antioxidant carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are found in very high concentrations in the macula, the so-called "yellow spot," and are responsible for its yellow coloration. It is therefore assumed that they container protect the retina from harmful influences. Secondary plant substances, such as those found in blueberries, container improve the oxygen and blood supply and also have an antioxidant effect. Zinc, vitamin C and vitamin E container protect cells from oxidative stress and harmful influences from free radicals and thus support the function of the carotenoids.
